I'm celebrating my 25th anniversary of taping shows this year! I started 1992, and my 2 goals have always been:
1. Enjoy the show 2. Get a better recording than the last one
Recorded from 20-30 meters, outer right PA (see picture included!)
On the 50th show of the Book of souls tour 2016 - Iron Maiden did their 4th visit at Sweden's biggest outdoor arena, Nya Ullevi in Gothenburg. Even though a crappy Swedish artist hold the record there (70.000) Iron Maiden had over 55.000 people at the show. Not bad for a band with no airplay on normal radio and not bad for a band that has been together for approximately 40 years.
This was a very windy day, and for this show I had tickets to the very front row (like Golden circle). A good decision it seemed, since I had PLENTY of room to the right of the stage, and I positioned to the very right in front of the outer PA (take a look at the picture a friend took from the upper deck seeting!). I had no one around me to disturb the recording, in the front or behind me for the whole show.
The wind obviously took charge of the show, making it sound very bad for the people not being up close in the front, like me, and the show had very bad reviews for this. The band, however, was doing great! But to me you don't do 40% new songs at a show like this - you should do more classic Maiden in front of 55.000 people that have been drinking beer and other alcohol all day long (friday night). The new songs can be played indoors at smaller shows. AnyhowÉ Bruce had some trouble with his mic from time to time (or is it his voice?) - other than that - this sounds as good as it possibly can!
I have not removed any clapping or screaming this time (as I had to do from the Sweden Rock recordings) - because there was only me at the taping spot! :) I used the AKG CK63 for this show, which are hyper cardioid microphones - which means that the crowd can't be heard at all - I only pick up what's in front of me. I only turned around a few times in between songs, so you could here a little more how great the crowd was.
Remember: 118 minutes of a great show with Iron Maiden, is equal amount of time of total silence for me
ENJOY!
I've seen several of my recordings being made into CD's and then SOLD. Not that I can do anything about it - but please:
1 - I paid good money for the recording gear (a LOT with the new gear) 2 - I paid for the ticket 3 - I stood silent during the whole show 4 - I took the time and effort to upload it here 5 - PLEASE don't be an asshole and take the credit
