I only have one request, that you don't take these files and post them on other torrent sites. I have many shows to upload. I will upload, let them get seeded by others and after a majority have downloaded the files completely, remove my files so I can seed something new. I really wanted to film Judas Priest in New Haven Coliseum on August 7th. It was the dead of summer and it was one of those summers where it was so unusually hot and humid in the northeast. I remember the summer of 88 with the haze in the air constantly that you could see for miles ahead as you were driving on a highway. So when I went to New Haven for the show, the back door was locked for this show and I couldn’t enter there. They only opened the front doors and they were frisking people very well for this show. As they did for most shows in the front doors where most people entered. The search was even more intense probably because it was a ‘metal’ band show. Like ‘metal’ fans were going to be more of a threat than fans of say U2 or ZZ Top or Elton John. Metal fans always had this bad rap and for some reason they needed to search them more. Early day profiling??! Funny how the level of search changed based on the artist at these arenas.
This night was unusual at the New Haven Coliseum and they were searching real well. I strapped the camcorder and all the extra hardware on my back and wore that winter lined coat (for some stupid reason) and walked up close to the main entrance and just watched the security search. I was dripping with sweat in the hot humid evening inside that winter lined coat, I could feel the sweat going down my arms inside. I was probably sweating even more due to being nervous looking at the search too. After a while, I just couldn’t see a weakness in the people searching. Everyone was getting patted on the back and a full leg frisk. I decided, since I didn’t have a ticket, and that it was going to be extremely unlikely that I was going to be able to get the camera in, to just leave and go home. I think this was the only time I wasn’t able to get my camcorder into New Haven Coliseum.
Fortunately, a week earlier, Judas Priest played the Providence Civic Center. At this point, I had never filmed in this Providence arena. (Well sort of...). I just got the first Sony 8mm camcorder, the Ricoh exact copy version and filmed my first show outside of Springfield, MA or New Haven, CT at Nassau Coliseum (Bruce Springsteen) on April 1st (previously posted). So I was only just starting to film outside of the two arenas where I was comfortable and thought I could only get my camcorder in the buildings. I had just filmed David Lee Roth in Worcester, MA in late April. Those were the the first two shows outside of my comfort two arenas in the area. I wanted to add Providence to that list. I tried to film at Providence on July 20th for the Ace Frehley / Iron Maiden show. This was that super hot & humid summer and the search was real intense to the point I just couldn't get the camcorder in. That was my 1st failed attempt there.
Then on July 25th I tried again in Providence for Robert Plant. The search was entirely different. I guess because Robert is not a metal act. I was able to get the camcorder into Providence for the first time!!! Well, as I was filming 45 minutes into the show, I was caught by two roaming security guards, probably because I was a few seats in from the tunnel entrance just to the right side of the entrance. It was a rookie mistake and this is a story for another time, but here I am again with another failed attempt in Providence. It ate at me all week. Fortunately, I was able to film again that week to get that bad taste at Robert Plant and missing out on Maiden out of my mouth.
By now, I had filmed in a lot of the arenas and stadiums in the northeast and I had a lot of confidence. You get knocked down and you get back up and do it better the next time. You learn from it and get better if you really want to. I also really wanted to film Priest at least once as I never filmed them before. That was a driving force as they were one band I grew up on. And with not getting Iron Maiden on July 20th and getting caught at Robert Plant on July 25th in Providence, I was even more determined to get in to this Providence Civic Center and get it.
So I drove up there, walked up and bought a ticket out front. It didn’t matter what the seat was, I wasn’t going to sit in the seat. I just needed to get through the damn door. This was a metal show again but I was determined to make it in once and for all for a metal show there. I also decided for some reason to try and get the Walkman D6C and associated mic in to run audio as I filmed too. Don't know why I complicated the chances of getting caught going through the door, but I did. After observing the search for a while, I found a door where it looked like they were not patting backs. Only one door was not patting backs. I went to it and even though I was the only guy wearing a winter lined jean coat in July to this concert, on this super hot and humid summer night. If you had to profile one guy, I was the one. I moved up through the line to the security guys and started some casual conversation with them. They did not pat my back like they weren't doing it to other people as they check their tickets and I was in. Whew! Sweating intensely and all and I was in. The hard part was over but it was still on my mind that I was caught 6 days earlier filming at Robert Plant in here. Now it was time to get this friggin’ coat off and get a spot to film from. In I went and decided to go to the other side of the arena from where I was caught at Robert Plant thinking they might be looking there for me again. I got to my seat and Cinderella went right on and I scrambled to get set up for them.
I was successful for the first time in Providence! I got Cinderella (posted last week) and I was able to film Judas Priest for the first time. Good thing it all happened in Providence because I wouldn't end up filming in New Haven also as previously planned and this would end up being my one and only opportunity in 1988 to film the Priest. Chalk that up to an over-riding determination to conquer filming in Providence for the first time and what occurred the past two weeks there at Maiden and Plant. It was always nice back then to notch another arena. But after you did get that first one, all the great past shows that were there flashed through my head in thinking how I would have loved to have this camcorder in that arena for those shows. Well, at least it was for this show and I finally filmed one of my favorite bands. Enjoy Judas Priest Ramming it Down in Providence! CBG5150
